    In light of recent media attention regarding dog fighting and animal cruelty in general, I want to share with you information on how you can become involved in recognizing, reporting, and helping stop animal cruelty locally.

Recognizing animal cruelty is the first step. There are often signs of abuse such as:

• Untreated wounds on the body of an animal
• Extremely thin or starving animals
• Animals missing patches of hair/fur
• Animals injured that are left untreated
• Animals, primarily dogs, left alone (often tied or chained up) repeatedly with no water, food, and/or shelter from the heat or cold.
• Animals that are visibly aggressive or fearful of their owners

    If any animal you encounter exhibits one or more of the above signs, your should evaluate the situation carefully, and if safe, document and then report the neglect or abuse. Video, photos, cell phone pictures, times and dates are especially important after the fact for legal prosecution.

    In Oklahoma, animal abuse is a felony. Although the Tulsa SPCA is not affiliated with local law enforcement, they work with local law officials to rescue abused and neglected animals as well as provide documentation for further legal action against the accused abuser.
