Be Prepared

In recognition of September being National Preparedness Month, I'd like to pass along some valuable information on the basics of being prepared for disasters both natural and man-made.

There are three basic steps recommended by both our state homeland security website and the American Red Cross.

Get a Kit: Basics include water (1 gal per person) for a minimum of 3 days. A 3 day supply of non-perishable food. A manual can opener. Battery powered or hand-cranked radio. First Aid Kit. Dust Mask. Garbage bag, plastic ties, and moist towelettes. Matches. Wrench or pliers.

Make a Plan: You and your family should have a plan for both staying put or getting away depending on the nature of the disaster. Keep a map handy as well as copies of your child's school emergency plans. Plan in advance where you and your family will meet and/or go in an emergency. You should choose several destinations for options. If you have pets, take them with you. Call area shelters ahead of time and find out which ones will accept pets in an emergency.

Be Informed: Learn ways to obtain information in an emergency. Signing up for E-Alerts from state and local officials is a great start. Educate yourself on what types of emergencies could occur locally and what different planning or supplies are needed for each one.

For more complete and detailed information, visit Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security or Tulsa Red Cross. Both are devoted to providing information and services to the public. There you will find detailed information about planning for many specific disasters, including natural, biochemical, nuclear, and chemical threats.
